Celebrating Walking in Ireland

On Friday, 23 September there will be a number of satellite events taking place in conjunction with Walk21 Ireland. These events will take place in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. The aim of the events is to spread the impact of the Walk21 Ireland conference around the country and to get more local groups, experts and communities involved in making our communities more walkable environments.

Here is a snapshot of some of the events!

Howth, Co. Dublin

Who & When?

Ken Boyle of TU Dublin will lead a beautiful walk along the cliffs on Howth Head in Co. Dublin. The event will start at 10.30am and last roughly two hours.

What?

Howth Head is located to the north of Dublin city and is an area of high conservation and recreational value. Howth Head is also a major tourist attraction with visitor numbers potentially impacting the environment and the recreational enjoyment for residents of the area.

Management of the network of trails on the headland balances recreation pressures with the need to protect sensitive habitats. We plan to engage with representatives of the local authority, community groups and conservation ecologists in a discussion on the challenges of managing this resource. Vegetation is being controlled with a herd of native Irish goats and this and other management actions will be discussed on the day.

In addition to the spectacular views from Howth Head you will be meeting with people who are engaged in the day-to-day management of this resource, people who have experience in addressing and balancing the challenges presented by the site.
